Eat Like a Tourist

First stop: Bolivar!
Happy New Year South Florida foodies! We are so fortunate to live in a part of the country that celebrates its fusion of cultures and history through food. During the holiday break, I decided to join the out-of-towners and get a taste of South Florida from the tourist’s point of view.

Steak sliders at David's Cafe

Miami Culinary Tours takes you on an “edible gastronomy journey” through different neighborhoods, including South Beach and Little Havana. Last week, I joined guide Mirka and 15 other adventurors for a three-hour walking tour of South Beach. I was excited to discover many of the participants weren’t non-locals, but mostly from South Florida and, like me, wanted to explore their hometowns.

Empanadas at Food Network magazine favorite Charlotte Bakery

Our energetic host, who is a Miami Beach native, told colorful stories about South Beach’s architecture and history, including the stories of Miami’s pioneers like Carl Fisher and Barbara Capitman. At each of our six stops, we sampled tasty morsels, likw plantains paired with a delicious pineapple cream soda/beer concoction from Colombian eatery Bolivar. Next was ceviche and chicken from Goyo el Pollo, steak sliders from David’s CafĂ©, empanadas from Charlotte Bakery, pisco sours and Papa Rellenas from Cevichery, stracciatella gelato from Milani Gelateria, and chocolate almond cookies from Jerry’s Famous Deli.

A+ for Presentation and Taste at Cevichery

The restaurants on the tour change frequently so this attracts return customers like the four ladies from Kendall who were back for their third tour. Miami Culinary Tours, I’ll be back!
