The best endorsement a Cuban restaurant can have is the loyal following of local Cubans. Judging from the continual traffic and filled tables, Havana’s Cuban Cuisine has the approval of Cubans, Mexicans, Argentines and now, Scots!
Due to the popularity of Havana’s original Cooper City location, owners Michael Mellion and Edwin Scheer opened a second Havana’s Cuban Cuisine in Sunrise. Casual and welcoming, the restaurant is decorated with corrugated metal walls, dark wood tables and chairs and old photographs hung on the walls. Diners who are also sports fans can enjoy the game while watching from the nine flat screen televisions; but honestly when the food and company is this good, the televisions are just distracting.
On a recent Friday evening, my fellow foodie Cristen and I headed west for a deal we couldn’t miss: $2.50 margaritas! This deal isn’t just on Fridays as the margaritas are $2.50 during all hours of operation, which is always the perfect way to kickoff the night … or afternoon, if you’re so inclined. To accompany the margaritas, we shared the yuca frita, beautifully golden fried yuca which was crispy on the outside, fluffy on the inside and ideal for dipping in the house-made cilantro sauce ($4.25).
Cristen's Lechon Asado
I may have taken advantage of the margarita’s low price and sipped a bit too much as I ended up splurging on dinner. I indulged in the house specialty of lobster tail, sautéed in creole sauce ($24.95), which was recently featured on NBC’s South Florida Today. Cristen had the pulled pork with grilled onions, garlic and Mojo sauce ($10.95). Both were accompanied with rice and plantations.
The House Specialty: Enchilado de Langosta
I must say that I would have to raise a glass to the food and most importantly, the unbeatable margarita prices.
